a new course was released this week with quite a few significant changes from the qualifier. the race starts at the city, but now finishes in kalamunda. there is a loop around kalamunda/mundaring/darlington that will be negotiated once for women/senior riders and twice for everyone else. our training ride will only do the loop once, but you have the option for 2 laps if you have the time.
as with the qualifier, the course heads up the zig-zag. as it is a one-way road heading down, we will not be using this road for training. instead, we will head up gooseberry. there may be other minor changes that we need to make for training, so make sure that you have a good look at both the training map and the actual race day map so you know where the differences are.
the initial recon ride on the 3rd july will not be at race pace as it will allow people to understand where the course goes and the turns that you will need to make. on race day, i expect that the traffic management will help you navigate the course, but up till then, make sure you don’t get lost during our training rides.
as per the qualifier training, it will be neutralised out to helena valley road, then race pace from when it crosses roe hwy. the final actually does a hard right hand turn just after roe onto midland rd and tackles ridgehill from the other side. however, we will skip that and head across to gooseberry. there are a few other subtle differences, but they have been made for safety reasons. we do not have closed roads and will be travelling in packs probably at speed. however, you must obey all road rules at all times. this is training, best not get in a serious accident before your big race.
for training, we will head up gooseberry a second time and race to the service station at the top of kalamunda. there we will have a 20 min regroup allowing people time to get food/water or toilet. after that, it will be a controlled return to the city via lesmurdie/welshpool road. if anyone wants to do a second lap, then they can regroup at the servo and head off when they have their group together.
have a look at the map below and upload it to your gps enabled device. this training is open to anyone, not just qualifiers, but please be aware that unlike our other rides, there are no regroups till after the second time up to kalmunda. please be aware of your own abilities and make sure you have adequate food/water for the ride.
there are only a few days to the most popular sleep deprived 3 weeks of the year for most of us. the tour de france starts in mont-saint-michel and begins it’s anti-clockwise trek around france. again we will be running a sweepstakes (as opposed to a full tipping comp) to make the tour a little more exciting for you. sorry for the lateness of organising this, there has been a bit on leading up to this week.
our sweepstakes are a little different in the way that they distribute the prize money. as usual, teams will be randomly drawn out once all entries are in. however, instead of just the usual stage win, yellow jersey win etc we will be tracking the actual prize money that the teams win. the percentage of the total prize pool that each team wins, will be what your entry wins from the total prize pool of the sweepstakes.
in the tour, money is awarded for sprints, mountains, teams, wearing leaders jerseys and final positions. basically every team will receive something from the prize pool. the actual winner of the tour will receive 500,000€ out of the 2,295,850€ prize pool which is 21.77%. in our sweepstakes the entry that has the winning team will receive 21.77% of the sweepstakes prize pool, in this case approx $140. however, every top 20 finish, intermediate sprint, mountain points and even days in a leaders jersey will also see your team accumulating money.
so, you do not have to do anything but purchase your entry and hope you get a good team. then you just follow that team and pray that they have someone in the break to collect money along the way.
entries are $30 and there is only 22 teams in the tour so get in fast. all money from the entries will be returned to the prize pool. for more information, see the tipping home and rules pages linked below and click the link to enter. you can also access the home page via the menu above.
The Tour of Margaret River is an annual, multi-stage road race put on by SWCC in the iconic Margaret River region. SPR has been represented at ToMR since…… forever. You’ve seen the photos, read the race reports, heard the anecdotes from other Club riders (and they are NEVER embellished….). But have you ever thought of racing the event yourself? Well, do you:
Hold a current SPR membership?
Ride with the SPR as a member on our Club Rides IN CLUB KIT and/or race in Club Kit already?
Hold a Cycling Australia Race licence with SPR?
ToMR is raced over three stages and three days, 11th to 13th November 2016, in a Pro Race-like environment through the rolling undulations and challenging hills of the South West region. This ain’t no Sportif – this is racing, baby.
The 40km Team Time Trial on Stage 1 sees the teams seeded for subsequent stages by times, recorded by the fifth team rider crossing the line – tactics count, as you cannot drop (or sacrifice) your team mates.
Stage 2 is a tough day – where yesterday’s seeding sees the teams graded into fields of 10 teams in each grade. Contesting 100km of hills, starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Nannup, this is one for the climbers among us.
Stage 3 doesn’t let up. 60km of road race, incorporating a few punchy Caves Road climbs to keep the heat up until sprint to the finish line.
Stage and overall prizes are up for grabs in each grade.
The Elite women and men (including NRS teams in previous years AND our own friends, the DOME Coffee team) ride the same course, on the same day under the same race conditions as those of us a little further down the seeding list. You wanna feel Pro? You wanna LOOK Pro – this is it Ladies and Gentlemen. Take a look for yourself….
It’s time to start thinking about this years’ ToMR teams. SPR has a number of team places allocated by the organisers this year in the Womens and Mens categories. We are now opening expressions of interest to Club Members. The staging over different locations and point to point races requires shuttle transportation to and from start/end points. So this year we will be running a package deal only arrangement for participants, inclusive of race registration, shared bus transportation and shared accommodation in “Team Houses”.
What’s needed?

Attend the post Saturday morning ride Q&A, at Dome Westralia Plaza – Saturday 25th June, after 08:30 am.
There are some expectations of expressing interest. We’ll cover all of this at the Q&A, but the “Disclaimer” stands: as always, selections and decisions are at the discretion of the All Powerful Race Committee (aka APRC).
politicians. generally regarded as a bunch of lying bastards that love to hear the sound of their own voice. however, the way this country is run and access to the funding available means that you sometimes need to get a little political to make things happen. as such myself and the northern beaches cc president, chris howard, have nominated to stand as senate candidates in this years federal election. we are representing the australian cyclist party and our aim is to give all cyclist a voice especially in regards to legislation and infrastructure. the australian cyclist party is not that well known here in perth but it has done enough in the east over the past few election cycles to qualify as a national party. the aim is to start to influence policy and decisions as we see a close link between cycling and transport, health, environment and town planning priorities.
so what can you do??? well for starters, voting for the party on the white senate paper would be a good start. we will probably need some help on election day to have a presence at polling booths, and there will also be some political fundraising later to cover costs. however, right now, it is all about getting the name out there. we have setup a facebook page and i encourage you to like/share/comment. the way that facebook works is that the more interaction we get, the more it ends up in other peoples newsfeed. at the end of the day, there are a lot of cyclists in perth and we need to let them all know that they have a political option.
rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides. it is up to all members to enforce these rules.
numbat cup cyclocross – the next round of the numbat cup is on this weekend. you don’t even need a cx bike as a mtb will do as an alternative. there is even a kids race on for the under 13’s. very low key racing and there is even beer handups (not in the kids race). entries close tonight (except kids can enter on the day). please see their website for entry and further details.
pickering brook race 02 – the next round of the pickering brook series is on next weekend. this event always sells out early, so if you want to race, then get on board. results from this series go towards our road race champs. for those of you that have been out and raced the midland events at pickering brook, you will know what a well run event it is. however, they need a bit of help. midland are asking for some volunteers to help keep the races run at a high level. most of the jobs are pretty easy and will be centred around the start/finish area. these include time keepers, rider assembly and roll calls and will allow a midland member to go and man a corner on the circuit. if you can help out, or if your partner can while you are racing, please contact wayne directly and let him know what you can do. it is important that the local racing continues to be provided so that the sport can develop.
cyclo-sportif swan valley – expressions of interest are open for anyone that wants to be in an spr team for the swan valley cyclo-sportif. this is a great opportunity for anyone that is looking for that next step after the spr group rides. it is not quite racing, but it also, kind of is. teams of up to 9 riders complete a timed course with the entire team finishing together. it is an all new course as the track cycling will not be running this year. make sure you have a look at the bwa links as there are a few different course with and without climbs. please see the previous post for further info and add your name to the comments if you are interested.
spr road race champs – the club road champs has been updated after the first pickering brook race. if you have raced in any of the 4 races listed, see how you are tracking in club points. the leaderboard can be found in the menu above or here.
ride routes – a partly cloudy morning with very little chance of rain predicted for saturday morning. hopefully this breaks the cycle of wet saturday mornings and there can be a good (but cold) turnout for the main ride.
saturday 11th june
ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am

represent. after the other weeks post showing a spr branded bike, i was looking at some other examples of people representing spr. i often get emails or facebook shows me lots of people showing the club colours away from perth. so sarah is in italy at lake como visiting the ghisallo da bellagio, katrina has moved to chile and is climbing mountains there, while matt is in las vegas checking out team tibco. with the club the size that it is, there was always people on the move riding in different locations. send in any good pics you have or post them to any of the spr facebook sites and you may end up as a blog header.
ride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for may is Carton & Cowater. bringing you water in a more environmentally friendly packaging. Carton & Co is a Perth based company trying to lighten the load on our planet.
rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides. it is up to all members to enforce these rules.
bike lights – it is now at that time of year where if you are doing the earlybird ride, then you need a good set of lights. last year i wrote a long post about bike lights and what we expect when riding in a group. basically, bigger/brighter is not always better. please read the post take note of what effects your lights have on the rest of the group. take any suggestions on board as at the end of the day, it is for the safety of the group as a whole.
spr kit – the latest shipment of kit will be available for pickup after the saturday main ride. there are a few minor items on back order (some gloves & socks) but the main kit has arrived. the one-off lycra socks will also be available. the weather may effect this, so contact andrew via kit@southperthrouleurs.com.au if you want to make other arrangements.
goldfields classic – entries have closed for this race but we are still organising the logistics behind getting people there and back. if you have already been in contact with the race committee about travelling with the club, then some payment is now due. please see the previous post for more details.
spr road race champs – the club road champs has been updated after the first pickering brook race. if you have raced in any of the 4 races listed, see how you are tracking in club points. the leaderboard can be found in the menu above or here.
ride routes – just to make things consistent for the month of may, it looks like they are again predicting heavy showers for saturday morning. not quite the stormy conditions from last week but it may be enough to thin the numbers significantly. it has been an above average month for rainfall, but still well short of the maximum for may so this weather should not be unexpected. however, it just seems to line up with when we want to ride.
saturday 28th may
ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am
had a very long busy week which still hasn’t finished. don’t have anything to talk about or the energy to think of an engaging topic. so, lets throw this back to you. what is bugging you at the moment??? the weather, riding, politics??? comments on the blog and facebook sites will be responded to.

spr community guidelines and advertising policy – as the club has grown we tend to get more and more requests to advertise a business or event that may or may not be relevant to our membership. after a few difficult discussions, the committee has developed a policy regarding both how people can advertise on our sites and also what our expectations are for our own community. the community guidelines can be found above under the “about spr” tab. these cover how we expect you to behave when commenting our spr branded sites. these include this blog, the south perth rouleurs facebook page, the spr facebook page and the spr chicks facebook page. the promotions policy can also be found under the same tab. it covers how and what we will allow to be advertised on our sites. just do not assume that because it is bike related, it will be okay to post. since members of the committee have admin rights to all of the previously mentioned sites, you may find that your post gets removed. the committee has developed this policy to protect our club sponsors from other business conflicts and also our members from events or other promotions that may not offer an adequate level of coverage. please read the policies and ask a committee member before you post anything that you are unsure about.

racing – both the 1st of the pickering brook series (sold out) and the first of the numbat cup cyclo-cross series (entries open till tonight) are on this sunday. hopefully we get a good representation across both races. the pickering brook race goes towards the road rider of the year award. maybe even a few hard core racers do both???
spr kit – the latest shipment of kit will be available for pickup after the saturday main ride. there are a few minor items on back order (some gloves & socks) but the main kit has arrived. the one-off lycra socks will also be available. the weather may effect this, so contact andrew via kit@southperthrouleurs.com.au if
goldfields classic – feel like racing across the vast expanse of the kalgoorlie area??? the goldfields classic handicap race is on again and we are looking at who wishes to head across for the long weekend of racing. as in previous years, spr will organise the logistics of transport, accommodation and transfers so you can just pay, turn up and race. please see the previous post if you are interested in racing or even in volunteering to help out.
spr road race champs – off the back of the crit championships will be the road race championships for 2016. there are a number of races identified that riders will accumulate point for. a change in the scoring system this year to try to allow those that have a go at ‘a’ grade a better chance of getting points. please see the previous post for more info.
ride routes – well another saturday in may and another predicted wet day. this week’s prediction is for a good one though. heavy rain and high winds always make for “awesome” riding conditions (note sarcasm). however, the predictions usually slip back a few hours over the next few days. there is a chance that it may stay clear until mid-morning. if not, and you are riding anyway, just be aware to ride to conditions and not to do anything risky. you are not the only one that can get hurt.
saturday 21st may
ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am
what does the club mean to you??? to some i guess it is just a place were the rides are organised and they turn up on a saturday. to others, it may be something that they have seen develop from it’s infancy and go from a handful of mismatched riders on a saturday to a living breathing entity. to me it is bigger than i ever imagined it would be. it can be a lot of things to a lot of different people and we are happy for people to get what they need out of it. for some, the way they show what the club means to them is to get a custom painted bike with spr green highlights and the “rouleurs” tag on the top tube. unfortunately, it is not my bike.

cyclocross – half road biking, half mountain biking. cross is here and there is lots of opportunity to get involved. read louise’s race report from supercross16 here. one of the few bike races where it is okay to wear a tutu, or supergirl outfit, or even bumblebee wings. the next cross race is also on the 22nd of may. if you are really good, you could race pickering brook in the morning and cyclocross in the afternoon.
spr socks – we hope to have the spr socks down at the coffee shop this saturday after the ride. last week was a bit of a washout and the socks stayed in their nice warm box.
gfws national kit – if you rode well at the any of the grand fondo qualifiers and have managed to secure a spot in the final in september, then hold off purchasing your national kit. we are currently investigating a spr version of the national kit so we can identify our members a bit easier. see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – great, they are predicting another wet saturday morning. hopefully, the schedule slides a few hours giving us a dry window to get the legs turning over first thing in the morning. on sunday, we will be heading south to avoid all the plane spotters trying to get a glimpse of a very big plane.
saturday 14th may
ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am
when we encounter other groups on the road, please be polite and accommodating when you are overtaking them. just because you are faster, doesn’t mean that you can bully your way past and expect them just to get off the road for you. if that was the case, we would not be able to complain about cars passing us. make sure that the group in front knows that you are coming. ring a bell or shout out that there are “bikes back”. don’t just cut straight in front of them and be aware that after the first few riders get in front, the rider you are overtaking will actually speed up a bit as they will start to get a draft. stay wide until you are sure that you are a bike length clear. also, if it is a group you are overtaking, make sure that you do it single file. no point putting everyone at risk, just so you can keep rolling through while you dodge bikes, traffic islands and oncoming traffic. we are not the only road users out there and i am pretty sure that we are not the only people that ride in groups around the river. i am sure that you have been on the receiving end of some bad overtaking in the past. make sure that you don’t do the same to others.

stickers and socks – just to be clear about purchasing items through the club. we are not a commercial business. we do not chase you up to collect your goods. it is up to you to keep an eye on the blog and make an effort to collect items when they are hauled down to the coffee shop on a saturday morning. the stickers have been available to be collected for many weeks now. there are still about 15 people yet to collect, so we are going to snail mail them out to you. you may get them next week. the socks have arrived and we will endeavour to get them to the coffee shop this weekend. however, since it will probably be raining, numbers may be down anyway. please make the effort to collect your items. the people that are organising these things are left to run around and make themselves available to get you what you have already paid for.

uwct training ride – to allow those that have qualified to keep their toe in, and those that want a good solid limited stops hills ride, we will now run a 1st sunday of the month uwct training ride. this will replace the long hills ride once a month and follow the same format as the previous uwct training. as it is now a lot darker, we move the start to 7:00am. and as it is primarily for those that have qualified, we will only have 1 start time and see how it plays out. we can adjust as we move closer to the actual final.
women’s only ride – this saturday is the first of the month and as such we will have our women’s only rides in main 1, 2 & 3. take control of your own group and ride up front.
ride routes – it’s looking like it may be a bit soggy this saturday morning. hopefully it will clear up for all the mums on sunday whether they are riding or not…
saturday 7th may
ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am
Its on again! The Goldfields Classic this year it is held on 4th and 5th June. Ride, race and hang with mates for two days…. how good is that!
SPR have been supporting riders to race the Goldfields for many years and again we want to send a contingency of enthusiastic riders to the event. We will again organise the logistics of transport, accommodation and race transfers.
The race will suit those riders that like long flat roads, who want to take in the beautiful scenery of the outback and breathe in the fresh country air.
The race committee is looking for you to join us. Right now we are looking for your interest in doing the event, email us at race@southperthrouleurs.com.au
Some more information from the website.
