512 Rhianna Farrell (*)
305 Diego Gomez

(*) Rhianna unfortunately came down ill and was unable to travel πŸ˜₯

Read more here and here.

Wishing everyone the best of success!

From the Ride Coordinator β€” I was reminded this week of the need for regular maintenance – by your local bike shop, yourself or whoever you trust. In my case it was brake pads worn out – both front and rear. Luckily I had plenty of spares at home and could replace them quickly, but this isn’t always the case. Bike shops get busy before big events – and with TOMR and Cape to Cape looming, now is a good time to book your bikes in and make sure they’re in good shape for upcoming events, and Summer!

On Saturday we get a chance to meet and ride with Jai Hindley. Why don’t you cruise down to Barrack Square after coffee, and join Jai and lots of fans for a ride down Riverside Drive – with fully closed roads.

Ride Routes 1st – 7th October

There has been a lot going on in and around cycling these past few weeks, not the least of which being that “our Annemiek” capped off an incredible year (so far) with a World Championship win. Kudos.

In the green, we have some classic stories from Arletta in Europe (photos below and check out our Racing Recap from yesterday), from Nancy at Amy’s (photos below and check out FB). I know we also had members participating in the Tour of WA earlier this month though I’ve not seen photos yet 😎

There is also lots of opportunities coming up in the next few weeks, both on and off the bike. There is our Jarrahdale Team Time Trial, the October SPR Chicks ride, Bike Month, a number of events celebrating Jai Hindley’s Giro win as well as the Hutchy Memorial Ride for Andrew Hutchison. All the details below.

See you out on the bike.

Daniel

Β

Sunday 2 October at 7am meeting and ending at Lo Quay Cafe, Wilson – Coffee/food to end the ride. See FB event here.

Hutchy Memorial Ride β€” Following the tragic news last week of the accident that resulted in the death of Andrew Hutchison, we would like to let everyone know that there is to be a memorial ride for Andrew held on 16 October. Everyone in the wider cycling community is invited to take part. FB post here.

The details are as follows:

Date – Sunday 16 October
Start time – 6.30am
Start point – Woodvale Bike Shop
Destination – iamFIT Cafe, Joondalup Drive

This is a short 20-ish km social loop and there may well be a police escort depending on turnout.

SPR Jarrahdale Team Time Trial β€” We are very pleased to announce that entries are open to SPR’s Jarrahdale Team Time Trial for 2022.

It is perfectly placed as preparation for the Tour of Margaret River, and will run in Shire of Jarrahdale on the same challenging 30km course as last year. The course is undulating and includes a total of 440m of climbing β€” designed to provide riders with a very similar experience to Day 1 at the Tour of Margaret River.

The time trial is open to teams of 6 riders (minimum of 4 ) with the team time taken from the 4th rider crossing the finish line. Teams will be released on regular intervals of between 1 and 2 minutes depending on number of teams entered.

All the details on Facebook and tickets on EntryBoss.

If you have any questions, get in touch via our Facebook page or on race@southperthrouleurs.com.au.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” Finally – a week of good weather – and all this following an extra long weekend. The great training catch-up we all needed.

As the days get longer, a reminder that our sunday hills start times will change to 6am from 9th October. This is to avoid riding in the heat in summer, and gets us back home sooner (so we can mow the lawn and do all those other fun tasks in the heat of the day instead 🀣). Social short hills will remain with 7am start.

This Sunday stays at 7am start for all rides.

We’ve noticed a few more E-bikes appearing in our group rides. We’re happy to welcome all riders, but if you’re an E-bike rider, please ride at the pace of the group, and avoid long pulls in front, as this can disrupt the experience for the other riders.

As many riders are pushing a bit harder for TOMR training, remember to maintain concentration during rides – particularly the harder ones. Inattention is by far the greatest cause of crashes, and it can happen to anyone, but only if we let it. Watch that wheel in front, stay focussed, stay safe, and enjoy the warm weather.

Ride Routes 24 – 30th September

Come ride with us… As we get to the latter part of 2022, we thought it would be a good time to let you know the upcoming chick’s rides, dates and a little information. To mix things up we have decided on some different start times, days and venues.  These rides will be no drop, with the intention of socialising at the end.

Sunday 2 October at 7am meeting and ending at Lo Quay Cafe, Wilson – Coffee/food to end the ride. See FB event here.

Sunday 13 November at 5.30pm meeting and ending at the South Perth Food trucks – dinner at the food trucks.

December Xmas lights ride – more information to come.

All women are most welcome.  We would love to see many of you out with us!

Cheers,
SPR Chicks

Andrew Hutchison β€” Many of you will have heard the tragic news regarding the death of Andrew Hutchison earlier this week. Andrew rode with WGR and some of you may have raced with him at West Coast Masters.

However you look at what happened last Sunday, it is truly awful, and reminds us all of how exposed we can be as cyclists on the road. On behalf of SPR, I offer our condolences to Andrew’s family and his friends at WGR.

A friend and fellow cyclist at WGR, Ayman Haydar, has put together a fundraiser to support Andrew’s family through this tragic loss.

I encourage you to consider making a donation.

SPR Jarrahdale Team Time Trial β€” We are very pleased to announce that entries are open to SPR’s Jarrahdale Team Time Trial for 2022.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” When welcoming the new ride leaders last week, I forgot to mention that Jake Harper is also a new ride leader – maybe because at the time, he was walking the Camino in Spain (and doing a little bit of work). Welcome on board Jake – I’m sure F2 & M1 will benefit from your skills.

The long weekend (extra-long for some) is a great opportunities to cram in a few extra km – great for those doing TOMR. Forecast is for great weather – except on Saturday morning (no surprise there). Likelihood of rain is decreasing, so we may get lucky. Just to be cautious I’ve set up a Zwift ride for those who prefer a stay-dry guarantee. Monday gets us onto the Northern Public Holiday route – check it out if you’re not familiar with it.

As the weather improves (?) and the groups get bigger (Sunday Long Hills was a cracker last week) there is a tendency for riders near the tail end of big groups to shoot red lights to avoid being left behind. We can all help by calling β€œStopping” early, even if it splits the group. Far better to do that than take unnecessary risks at red lights. As part of our safety culture we always wait up for riders who choose to stop for a red light.

Enjoy the extra k’s this weekend, and stay safe.

There as been lots going on this week. We’ve had rouleurs away over east at Amy’s last weekend, some participating in the Act Belong Commit Dwellingup 100 locally and the AusCycling Masters & Junior Road National Championships running all this week. And with some huge results. If you didn’t see yesterday’s Wednesday’s Racing Recap, check it out. Also see some photos also below.

We also have rouleurs away in the upcoming weeks, in particular this weekend in Trento for the 2022 UCI Gran Fondo Worlds.

For those of us at home, with any sort of luck we will have at least some dry weather this weekend. Not to mention the opportunity for some extra kms on Thursday’s Public Holiday Ride.

On a more serious note, with the launch of our Jarrahdale Team Time Trial, we also have opportunities for volunteering. Or to put it another way, we could really use a little of your help. If you would like to race, or you can help as a volunteer, see below for all the details.

Finally, check out the update from our rouleurs participating in the MACA200 Ride.

See you out on the bike.

Daniel

The Photo Collection β€” some of these you will have seen before, some not. Either way, its very good to see green out on the bike in some exotic and challenging locations πŸ’š

First up, Adam Ralph sporting National Kit in Trento. In his own words:

“it’s such a treat to be here in Trento, the excitement is building and we  an see more and more National kits out on the roads. Here’s me in mine, kudos to Mayeur for the great looking design and top quality make.”

And some photos from the week just gone 😎

Also, check out Amy’s Gran Fondo results and AusCycling Masters & Junior Road National Championships results.

Sprockets MACA Ride Update β€” Next month SPR Ride Leaders, Bree, Greg & Faye will be participating in the MACA200 Ride which raises money for cancer research at the Harry Perkins Medical Institute (HPMI). The team has been busy with a number of initiatives to raise money.

In the main fundraising event held in June, they launched a β€˜Sprockets’ jersey that was able to purchased, with profits going to HPMI. This jersey has now arrived, so expect to see a few of these in the cycling pelotons over the next few months. The Team is delighted to advise they have raised over $15,000 towards cancer research and wanted to send a big shout out to the SPR community for their support.

Whilst it is too late to purchase a jersey, if you haven’t had a chance to contribute and you would like to donate towards valuable research into cancer treatments and cures, you can click on the following link.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” Welcome to our recently-qualified ride leaders Mandy, Greg, Maurice, Jane and Tom. These good people volunteer their time for the RL training and ride leading, so please help them make the ride a safe and fun experience for all by paying attention to what they have to say before and during the ride.

It also helps them if you’ve checked the route prior, and you ride with a group the matches your ability on the day. While Sunday rides don’t have official ride leaders, it’s still best to ride with a group that you’re comfortable with. There is now a social hills group leaving after β€œshort hills” that does the short hills route, but at a slower pace, and with more time allowed for regrouping. Perfect for those less familiar with hills rides, or just wanting an easier ride. Long hills is generally a stronger group with more distance and climbing, but still having regroup points.

Whichever you choose, have fun.

La Vuelta inspired Family Day β€” Thank you to everyone that came along Sunday for our family day. The food was exceptional, the company delightful and even the weather had the good grace to behave.

A special thank you to Carol for organising, and to Mandy for coordinating on the day (Carol being overseas and all!).

Amy’s is this weekend! Sending love and best wishes to SPR members who are heading across to ride in Amy’s.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” Fingers crossed the forecast stays on track, finally giving us fine riding weather for both Saturday and Sunday. Respect to the one and only person who pitched up for the ride last Saturday!

Despite the good weather this weekend, the roads may still be a bit slippery, with plenty of debris around.  I’m expecting a lot more riders out, so take care at roundabouts and on white lines, and remember to call out any hazards, and pass the message back in the groups. As nobody rode last week, we’ve got Holmes Rd again on Saturday. Take extra care near the start when turning right from Canning Hwy into Shepperton Rd. Communicate clearly when it’s safe to move across, and then move across together.

Sunday’s long riders will experience the joy of climbing the F’berg, a great route with a couple of steep gradients, which we don’t do often.

Enjoy the sunshine. πŸ™‚

Ride Routes 3rd – 9th September

I am little pressed for time this week so I will be brief. After some clear skies for a few days, the weather looks a little dubious for the weekend and next week.

Take the photo above as encouragement that spring and summer are coming. This photo was my Tour of Margaret River team training in just a few weeks this time last year.

For those attending the SPR TOMR Social tonight, enjoy.

La Vuelta inspired Family Day β€” Don’t forget that the club has our family day coming up on 4 September (this weekend). This is an opportunity which we don’t very often for everyone from the club to catch up informally, out of lycra, and in a setting that allows families to participate in the safe and casual environment at Como Bowling Club.

The theme, La Vuelta inspired, is Spanish cusine including a Chicken and Spanish chorizo paella and Spanish Churros. Drinks can be purchased from the Bowling Club. The Bowling Club has excellent facilities including indoor cover if the weather turns against us.

We’ve aimed to keep ticket prices reasonable – in fact, this event is subsidised by the Club as we think that it represents an excellent opportunity to bring everyone in the club together.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” And the rain goes on. Not great for those training for TOMR – and there are many of us in that boat. Some teams are doing a second river loop after the main Saturday ride to practice their Team Time Trial skills and build strength. We don’t recommend this in wet weather, or on busy roads, but it can be difficult to get teams together with the busy schedules we all have, and most of us are there on Saturday (when the sun is shining). I’ve added a Zwift ride this Saturday for those who prefer the low water-risk option. Sunday looks much better, and we’re back to Brookton. Whichever rides you choose, enjoy and stay safe.

Ride Routes 27th August – 2ndΒ September

Some of you may remember the view in the photo above. It was taken in 2014 at one of our Smashfest Criterium races, run in conjunction with Roues Chaudes Cycling Club.

I highlight this to acknowledge the work, energy and passion for cycling β€” racing in particular β€” that Daniel O’Donoghue brought to everything he did as President of the Roues Chaudes Cycling Club. This is significant as on the weekend just gone, Daniel finished up 13 years as President of RCCC.

In recent years, Daniel has been the driving force behind the Bayswater and Airport criterium races that have been a core part of the summer racing series.

Anyone involved in the behind the scenes of racing and sport in WA will also know that Daniel has worked tirelessly over many years to see the sport of cycling given a fair go.

For all the RCCC races I’ve personally participated in, on behalf of the races SPR members have participated in, and for all the races we’ve put on together as clubs β€” thank you Daniel.

La Vuelta inspired Family Day β€” Don’t forget that the club has our family day coming up on 4 September. Collie-Donnybrook and Return Cycling Classic β€” Well said by Mandy in Wednesday Racing Recap, but worth repeating…

There was a sea of green on the roads (and plenty of other SPR members in other kit) dueling the handicapper and competitors to conquer the race. Plenty of best times and personal achievements and whilst we congratulate all, we will single out a few including our Committee’s Race Captain Steve Burns for a tremendous 9th, chiming ”now that hurt” and only being dropped by the main group with 15km to go … Rounding out the Top 10 across the line was Gary Boylan, proving riding towards 70 he’s still got it, that racing pedigree is just inbuilt ! Our congratulations to Kate Bonner, fastest woman on the day and 2nd woman across the line, great work Champ.

Well done to the Collie Cycle Club, Western Australia, the Sponsors and tireless Volunteers who’re driving this historic Event towards a centenary !

WA State Fondo Series York Canola Classic β€” The York Canola Classic, to be held on 28 August 2022 β€” this weekend β€” is a picturesque mass-participation recreational ride hosted in the stunning Shire of York, approximately 90km east of the Perth CBD. Riders are invited to choose from a 93km or 52km distance option that will take you on a scenic journey from heart of the Town of York, through to the striking yellow canola fields of the Avon Valley Region.

To everyone, SPR or otherwise, riding this weekend β€” enjoy.

1. WCMCC Chidlow B Graded Scratch Road Race

From the Ride Coordinator β€” Looks like I spoke too soon about the sunshine last week … At least Sunday should be good, and we’ve go two of the lesser-used rides to enjoy – out Darlington Way. Last week we spoke about keeping group sizes to around 15 people. Another benefit of doing this for all rides, not just Saturday rides, is the effect at traffic lights. We don’t want anyone shooting red lights – It’s dangerous and against the law. Bigger groups always lead to a higher risk of the last few pushing their luck so as to avoid getting dropped. Lets remove the temptation by limiting group size, and assuring all riders that we will wait up for anyone dropped at a red light.

Expect fewer riders on Saturday with rain risk, so that means a wider range of capability in each group. Factor this in when setting the pace, and stay safe.

Ride Routes 20 – 26th August

I want to sent a shoutout to Greg Jones, the Development and Training Subcommittee and highlight the #Classof2022 Ride Leaders. Group rides are at the heart of the South Perth Rouleurs β€” we race, we time trial, we ride gravel, all that β€” but a defining characteristic of the club is regular, safe, organised training or group rides . Oh, and coffee. Though I’m not sure our Ride Leader course helps with that.

This is the first time we have run the Ride Leader course since the reigns were handed over from Rob Ramsden to Greg Jones, and I want to offer serious kudos to his work. And I would be remiss not to mention the entire subcommittee β€” thank you Michael Bonner, Meegan Fyfield and Bree Mitchell. Not to mention assists from Adam Ralph, Faye Daglish-Jones and Mark De Castro.

In any case, this weekend will be the first of the “observed rides” for our new Ride Leaders. With the weather looking good, we may even have some serious numbers out. So be kind, and remember that our volunteers are at heart of the rides we all turn up every day of the week for πŸ˜ŽπŸ’š

Finally, we have a number of riders (and the SPR van) heading down to the Collie Donnybrook the weekend. All the best.

Kudos all. See you out on the bike.

La Vuelta inspired Family Day β€” Don’t forget that the club has our family day coming up on 4 September. This is an opportunity which we don’t very often for everyone from the club to catch up informally, out of lycra, and in a setting that allows families to participate in the safe and casual environment at Como Bowling Club.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” Sunshine at last!! That means we should have more people turning up on Saturday. For the safety of all, we try to limit group numbers to around 15 riders. Please help the ride leaders by limiting/boosting group sizes as requested at the start, and also by making sure that the group you’re in matches your ability on the day. This way the roll throughs are smoother, and the load is shared by all. There are fewer surges off the front and fewer people being dropped, all which makes for a safer, more enjoyable ride and better training for those who want it. To celebrate the good weather we’re doing our longest (not by much) Saturday course; Collier and Malaga. This route was trialled and added some time ago, but has not been done by the club before. Much of it will be familiar from other Saturday rides, but please check out the link below and familiarise yourselves with the route. It’s a good habit to get into πŸ˜€

TREAT THE FAMILY TO A SPANISH FEAST FOR FATHER’S DAY

It has been a long time since SPR hosted a Family Day; the photo is a trip down memory lane from the last event. So what better way to celebrate again than a La Vuelta inspired Spanish style meal of nibbles, large serve of paella and churros with cinnamon and hot chocolate sauce. Adults $25; kids 13 or older are $13; other kids are free. Drinks can be purchased from the Bowling Club at very reasonable prices. This represents great value as it is subsidised by the Club.

So let us do the organising for you, and it doesn’t matter if it rains, we have it covered with indoor and outdoor spaces.

SPR Chick’s Dinner β€” As you are probably aware we have the SPR Women’s Subcommittee up and running, and one of the events we have planned is a women’s only dinner!

When: Wednesday 17 August, 6pm
Where: The Como in South Perth

We would love as many women as possible to come along to this event, to catch up, meet new people (without lycra, strava, garmin and all the gadgets) and enjoy lots of laughter.  Please be aware there will be no QOMs, or PRs that evening but a lot of women gathering to encourage one another in a sport we all enjoy.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” We used to talk about the weather in these blog posts about once a month in winter, but now we seem to speak of little else. What can I say – it really is changing. Saturday is not looking great, but Sunday should work for us. There will be a Zwift option on Saturday, but it may not have a leader; not really an issue when you can’t take a wrong turn, have a mechanical, or crash. Kudos to those who went out on the road last weekend. Despite ominous signs early on, it turned out well. There’s a message in there somewhere…

A quick reminder to call out any obstacles you see in the road ahead, and for all riders to pass these messages back quickly. If we all get into the habit of this, we’re sure to reduce the stress levels, and some crashes too.

Have fun and stay safe.

SPR Family Day Lunch β€” Celebrate the Spanish La Vuelta, last of three grand cycling tours in Europe with a Paella lunch at Como Bowling Club.

You may even want to bring Dad as this is also Father’s Day πŸ™‚

When: Sunday 4 September, 12.00pm – 3pm
Where: Como Bowling Club

In recognition of the support families provide so members can get out and cycle, the Club is hosting a family day lunch. To make it a little bit special with a cycling theme, what better way than with Paella, a traditional Spanish dish to coincide with La Vuelta. As the calendar is crowded during the grand tour the date has landed on Father’s Day. So what a great way to celebrate – all friends and family welcome and SAVE THE DATE.

Tickets and all the details in the SPR shop here.

From the Ride Coordinator β€” I’ve just come back from a very sunny Europe to a harsh reminder that it’s a cold wet winter in Perth, with a high likelihood of rain again on Saturday and Sunday morning! We’ll throw in a couple of Zwift rides for good measure, just so that those that want to can still ride with friends on both days, albeit virtually. I’ve opened up the rides so that anyone with the link can join the ride.

While away I was lucky enough to watch the last stage of the Tour de France on the Champs Γ‰lysΓ©es and had to marvel at the way the men and women were able to manage their positions in a peloton while pumping out 1000+ Watts in the leadup to the sprint. It reminded me that we’re sometimes not quite as disciplined when white-line fever strikes, as we wind up on Mounts Bay Rd, or Riverside Drive in our final dash towards coffee. It’s great to practice sprinting for those that want to, but whatever happens, keep to the left lane of the road. The cars use the right lane, and they don’t always take kindly to cyclists straying into their space. It’s less about what we’re allowed to do, and more about staying safe, and doing what we can to ensure we maintain a good relationship with motorists who don’t cycle. Go for the points, but keep left, take care and stay safe, especially when it’s wet!
