Training/Social Camp – EOI

I’ve been talking about this for a while with a few people, and being inspired by Ronnie’s EOI yesterday I thought I would follow suit.

My old club in South Australia used to run an annual training camp in a town called Melrose in the Flinders Ranged.  Basically we would converge on the local show ground over the Easter long weekend and do some serious training, serious drinking and serious socialising in general.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing something similar over here.  My thinking at the moment is to find a place near Dwellingup for either the Easter long weekend next year, or the Queens holiday weekend in October.

Depending on where we select their would be camping/caravan or villa accommodation choices (that is hard to soft respectively).

Riding goals would be around 150km per day.  Support vehicle to follow to provide food, drinks, spares, protection from traffic and lifts back to camp as required.

You would provide your own food etc for each day.  Ie we wouldnt cater you have to do it yourself.  Communal camp fire sessions encouraged etc.

MTB and road bikes welcome – heaps of tracks for MTBing.  There are also lakes and stuff up there for canoes etc.

Families totally encouraged – the more the merrier IMO.  However, there may be a maximum depending on location.

Anyway…  this is a long way out – but the first one would take a fair bit of organising so I would need to get started in the new year.  Plus places for Easter are already booking out ( I know right? who is that organised…).

Comments below for your expressions of interest, suggestions of location, suggestions of when etc etc etc…..

This is Melrose where the Whyalla Cycling Club goes for their Easter camp:

  1. This sounds awesome. The Dwellingup Caravan park has a number of chalets (with kitchens) that can sleep around 10 people in each, in bunk beds and a few doubles. It’s set up with 5 beds in each room, so you’d be able to have a couple of families per chalet, or just a bunch of singles.

There’s also camping areas and bushwalkers huts (really basic bunk accommodation).

Alternatively, Donnelly River is an old logging town where they’ve turned all the loggers’ huts into holiday acommodation. There’s BBQ pits, flying foxes etc, and a tonne of kangaroos, emus and birdlife that turn up for a feed throughout the day, so it would also be good on the family front. Plus plenty of hills.

    Count me in 🙂

  2. If your going to do the Easter/ANZAC wknd, should make it Pemberton. Besides the fact there is a decent MTB event that wknd, there are heaps of trails and roads to ride. Accommodation is a plenty with the camp school and caravan park as well as the pub for softies. For those bringing family who aren’t into the riding there are heaps of other touristy activities to keep them occupied and out of ur hair.

Another decent location is the camp at the near just out of Waroona. plenty of road to ride and MTB trails. The camp can also do some team building activities, obstacle courses and flying foxes etc and bit of abseiling. The main occommodation is in a huge old barn tpe building with a huge free indoor area, they can do rollerskating or any number of indoor sports.

  3. My old club in the UK used to have a training (excessive drinking) camp on the island of Majorca. Unfortunately being a poor student then I never went but they were legendary often 50 odd people all with common interests…still here stories about them now.
    I’m keen.

  4. that sounds like a fun idea toby, it would be good to do something like that, i’d love to go along- maybe even do a bit of riding

  5. Scott the Pemberton Classic is also that weekend. I guess we could incorporate the races into the camp?
Dunno – what do you all think?
