Interested in coaching?

Toby Hodgson, Operations Manager from Cycling Western Australia has written to the club outining some details for people who may be interested in developing their/a coaching career.

Toby has provided us with an overview of the recently updated Coaching Pathway for cycling coaching in Australia. This will help people to decide what course/s they may need to complete in order to coach a chosen target group.

Cycling Australia conducts four levels of coach education for cycling coaches at all levels, across all disciplines and events. It also provides a mechanism by which coaches can progress along the coaching pathway, should they wish to, as displayed in the Coaching Pathway diagram.

The Cycling Australia coaching courses are delivered by Cycling Australia and AustCycle approved facilitators under the strict guidelines of the National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). All accredited cycling coaches are recognised as having met the standards under the NCAS, which are recognised by the Commonwealth and state/territory governments.

Changes to the Coaching Pathway in 2013

During 2013 a number of changes will take place to the Cycling Australia coaching pathway structure as indicated in the pathways flowchart here. These changes include the following:

  1. Combining Cycleskill and AustCycle Coaching Courses: Previously two separate courses these will now be combined to form the AustCycle Skills Coach Course. Currently accredited CycleSkill coaches will be provided the opportunity to gain AustCycle Skills Coach qualifications through the review of an additional online resource providing further details on working in low traffic environments, an aspect not previously incorporated into the CycleSkill course.
  2. Introduction of Road and Track Skills Coach and MTB Skills Coach courses: A new pre-requisite to the Level 1 Road and Track and Level 1 MTB courses, the Skills Coach course will be a one day course  targeting  new coaches looking to undertake club level coaching assisting riders to build their riding skills and develop basic racing skills.

Toby has provided a brief overview of the two entry level coaching courses that we will be offering in WA this year. More information on the upcoming course in March is also included below. Future course dates will be promoted through the Cycling WA eNewsletter and website once they are set.

This 2 day course is the prerequisite for completing the Level 1 Road and Track Coach Course.

2012 Volunteer Award…and the winner is…

….Len Carmel!

Well, the Award didn’t go to Pete, but the breakfast was great and did get to see what an amazing array of groups and people there are out there in our local community doing largely un-thanked work for the benefit of the majority.

The awards were broken into 3 categories by age group, <18; 18 – 25; >25. The five criteria used to determine the winners were the actual activity the volunteer contributed to, their time doing it, the significance of their personal contribution, the added value they brought to the task and indications of them going above and beyond what would normally be expected of a volunteer within their normal remit.

In Pete’s category there were 19 nominees from a range of different organisations. South Perth Bridge Club, Como Uniting Church, SP Lions, SP P&C, SP Cricket Club, SPOCSI, Collier Park Hostel, Manning Tennis Association, PCYC, New Wesley Play Group, SP Home Reader Service, Collin Street Community Group, McDougall Park Community Garden, and of course, South Perth Cycle Club (Le Rouleurs!).

The winner, Mr Len Carmel, has contributed 42 years of his life to the South Perth Lions Club. He has been the Cake and Mint Chairman, distributed Lions Cakes throughout the local community, contributed to the organization of the Lions Youth Band and annual Kids of Courage activities. He’s currently working to establish a Men’s Shed in Manning and organizes the Lions Christmas Carols every year – stiff, but worthy competition for Our Pete….oh, and Len’s an ex pro jockey, so in his day he’d probably have given us ALL a run for our money up Welshpool Road!

Anyway, as a I say, the brekky was great, and I even got some tips on installing my home reticulation from the retired Total Eden designer I sat next to – can’t beat that!

2012 Volunteer of the Year Award – South Perth City Council

Many of you will know, but equally as many may not, that Peter Mah is the driving force behind what SPR is today; he was the founder of the South Perth Rouleurs in 2009. Starting with just 12 of us at the Coode Street Car Park, over the last 3 years Peter has grown the club to > 300 members. As recently as last week, the club started to run up to 8 different ride groups on a Saturday (a new record) and has run training rides 7 days a week for the past 18 months – not bad considering we started with Saturday (7am only) and Thursday (1 group;  12 people; ALL rolled through!), Peter’s dedication to the growth of cycling in Perth has led many people who have never cycled before to come and try the sport.

From the early days of opening his own home for club breakfasts (often with over 100 people) through to designing and organizing the manufacture of the now highly recognizable club riding kit, while his own modesty will not allow it and he will say “…it takes lots of people to do all the work…”, Peter is the reason for the club’s success.  Peter often sacrifices his own training rides to ensure new riders are part of the group and learn the skills of safe group riding; he sacrifices the opportunity to race so they can be organized; he sacrifices his nights and weekends to ensure the website is updated….. I will stop there or he’ll take this post down for embarrassment.

The South Perth Rouleurs is now an institution recognised nationally and internationally, where visitors from around Australia and the world join the rides when they are in town. This is largely due to our club website (developed and managed by Peter) where there is an active blog, online forums, shop and cycle tipping contests that keep visitors coming back regularly.  Most recently, Peter has introduced to the club the Therapy Focus Group, helping disabled kids to get out and have a go at different activities.

And, as they say, behind every great man, there is a (even greater?) woman. Kate Mah provided many of us with her hospitality in the early days when Pete would invite us all over for breakfast. More often though, she lent us her husband and the father of their two boys, Ben and Dan. It can’t be overstated how grateful we should all be that Kate is so generous…Pete!!

So,our illustrious founder and President is up for the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award hosted by South Perth City Council. The winner will be announced at a breakfast this Wednesday morning. I’ll let you know…..

Best of luck mate – you deserve it!

Monday Crusades!

A cold, wet expedition for those brave souls willing to create history for the glory of land and lady!

On arrival at the designated expedition departure point, Sir Specialized happened upon but just two brave, fearless souls of the SPR Order; Count Wilier and Duke Malvern-Star. Much was to be said regarding the surrounding weather that might lead to a tough, hard road ahead; there is scant merriment among men with precipitation on the mind. Perhaps The Northern Brothers of Scarborough, Baron Giant and Marquis Merida were again caught atop a precarious set of stairs; or perhaps this an unjust persecution of otherwise firm and favoured soldiers. With no other takers apparent, the three loan warriors departed for battle.

Labouchere Plains were crossed unscathed; The Day of Mothers being the only reference to the toils shared by men otherwise occupied yet yearning for battle with Hill and Valley combined. The Gods were kind as Canning Mews were wicked from the hooves of the still dry and as yet untested steeds. It was then, at the base of the Riesley Rise that Duke Malvern-Star, having been well rested at the heels of Specialized and Wilier, took to give his charge a stir. Specialized and Wilier were slow to respond and Malvern-Star belted to a quick and fleet footed lead. Slowly, but surely, the perhaps more battle hardened duo dragged Malvern-Star back to the fold where the three warriors punished collectively this hump’s foolhardiness with a deft and powerful strike to the top of the Rise…..round one to the Gallant Statesmen. The Heavens remained unopened.

The three Knights of the SPR Order traversed the civilized and sophisticated Empire of Booragoon; Malvern-Star relegated to the rear to think about his next opportunity to take charge; Wilier and Specialized firm with the warm inner glow of battle-won satisfaction. As the trio negotiated their way across the darkened Lands of Leach and Murdoch, they were joined by none other than the Wild Warrior of Wycomb, Lord Ridley! His hopes dashed at joining the Crusaders at the commencement of the expedition, a valiant effort to chase down his Bothers paid off; now, as a four-strong unit, how could anything stand in their way?!

Like a barbarian invasion of theByzantine Empire, the combatants ploughed their way forth. Duke Malvern-Star joined Sir Specialized at the front of the charge along South, wary of the Battle of Kardinya Hill that lay afore them. As the foursome rolled around the last bend, the full might of the challenge ahead revealed itself….and then the Heavens unleashed their fury!

With the rain unyielding in its anger, the soldiers took to their charges with vigour; Kardinya could still be theirs! Sir Specialised lead out, firm in the knowledge that Ridley and Wilier were in hot pursuit ready to strike out at their foe should he start to falter. Duke Malvern-Star, cured of his folly from earlier exploits, ensured that the group had their rearguard in place. As the rain formed bed sheets and vision was reduced, Specialised continued to charge, the breathing heavy with the weight of both the group’s expectation and individual physical exertion. Finally, as the second rise of the Kardinya Monster gave way, only three of the four remained; Malvern-Star having taken a heavy hit to the chest mid battle.

The descent beyond the Summit was brutal; water sprayed as the trio plummeted into the abyss. Vision was non-existent as the Heavens refused to be tamed; Malvern-Star gallantly throwing caution to the wind in order to rejoin the group. Thus, the drenched soldiers found themselves at the familiar South/Stock crossroads – the Battle of Fremantle would have to wait for another day….unfinished business to attend to!

The Heavens provided some reprieve allowing the group to take count of their wounds and recover from the previous battle. It was established that Wilier and Malvern-Star had not adequately prepared themselves for the conditions, leaving behind their covering footwear and other such wet weather sundries. Ridley and Specialised were on their last line of defence; feet still dry but wary of what was still to come.

A well earned respite was taken as the gents rolled along Stock until the Gods decided enough was enough; unleaseh the Beast!! The descent to Bourke wreaked havoc; visibility relegated to an imaginary concept; brakes squealing – annoyed at being called upon under such adverse conditions. The carbon rims on Lord Ridley’s pride and joy, stripped for cleaning and battle preparation only the evening prior, was now beginning to protest – howling into the unforgiving dawn. “CLEAR” was the call from Ridley who rounded Bourke first; “CLEAR” from Specialized altering Malvern-Star and Wilier to the absence of any four wheeled predators in their path.

Bourke relented. The foursome stomped on its head as though it were not ever a worthy opponent; all others knowing of course that this is rarely if ever the case, but that was the mindset of the warriors this day – they broke it’s will to provide even the slightest opposition. The Gods too relented; proof that while warriors may occasionally listen to their inner voices prior to departure from the cosseted bosom of warm and comfortable beds if the rain is pelting their roof, it never really lasts. The joy of it stopping whilst out is heaven; and allows for the true feeling of wet, sodden feet to be reveled in.

Melville offered no resistance; nor Majestic. And if not for the ‘ping’ of the youthful Duke Malvern-Star as the group more than adequately dispatched Gairloch, nay further a heart-rate would have been raised. The warriors returned to Raffles with the knowledge that the War was won; an adroit and commanding blow to the chest of would be Monday Resistors.

Coffee and cheers all round!
