ride routes 25th & 26th june

according to strava, we had the fastest thursday ride ever.  i managed to hang on till the last hill, rolled in a couple of minutes later and still made it in under an hour.  the pace was definitely on but that was about the peak of my day.  rolled home all ready for the work day and managed to twinge my back getting off my bike.  a day on the couch with a heat pack was the result for me.  funny how you tend to take your health for granted.  make the most of it while you can.

festival of cycling –cyclo-sportif and track cycling wa get together every year and put on this event.  we have 3 teams ridingin the cyclo in the morning and hopefully a couple of people to cheer along on the track.  we will have an spr tent set up as part of the festival to try to promote our club a bit more.  there will be a couple of us manning the tent so if you are either cyclo-ing or comingto watch the track racing, drop in to say hello.  there are a couple of cyclo riders that do not have a current spr jersey.  if you are coming down, can you please bring any spare jerseys you have.  put your name in it as toby’s went walkabout last year and we never saw it again.

fundraisers – we are looking at running a few fundraisers to help the spr riders that qualified to go to belgium through the perth uci race in april.  so far bonner, ainsey and jason (90%) are looking at heading over.  stu, dianne and claire also qualified but won’t be making the trip this year.  anyway, keep an eye on the blog as we will have a few events coming up to support these guys as they fly the flag for spr.

tour de france tipping – as we do every year, we will be running a tipping comp for the tour de france.  same rules as previous years where you have to nominate a ride every day as they accumulate time and points.  this year, however, we will be usingthe tipping comp as the first of our fundraisiers.  we will get some donated prizes (any volunteers let me know) for the winners of the comp, but all the cash will be put into the spr belgium fund.  as such we will make the entry $20 this year.  if you have done it before, you know that it is a lot of fun and this year will also give something back to the club.  keep an eye on the blog for more details.

ride routes – a couple of things this week.  firstly we don’t have a novice leader as both carol and vicky are away as well as we will be missing mark for the tranny group.  let me know if you can help.  the transitional ride route this week does use part of the preston point road the we have been discussing.  i cannot think of an alternative route that will not have it’s own risks.  we will use it (begrudgingly) for now, but just be aware.  also, i have limited ride routes for the tranny group.  if you have any ideas, let me know and we can map them for you.  a bit of variation helps keep it going.  on sunday, the usual ride leaders will be possibility doingother things.  the ride will still be on, but make sure you all know the route, as you may be called on to step up and take care of business.

  1. Fastest Thurs ride ever. Hmm, I will have to consult Strava and the old route for verification.. Although Dave was there, he said he was feeling pretty flat as we ran Wednesday night.

Good luck to all Sportifers. It is all about participation. See you out there.

  2. Just checked strava, I am thinking Feb 3rd and even Jan 20th were faster Thursdays (days I was in attendance of course.. Ok ok,, And Dave was there too).. Ave speeds as good as 40km/hr, Highest ave I could find from today was 38km/hr. Am I missing something?

I hope your back sorts itself out quickly.. Annoying how a slight wrong movement can affect you in such a big way….

    1. the new ride route means that older rides don’t count towards it any more. fastest one to date on that route that skips preston point road. and dave was there this morning.

  3. Re: Trannys ride routes: Currently have 5 rides :
    – Reverse River (Freo via Canning onto Leightons)
    – Rebold (Oceanic & West coast Hwy via Perry lakes)
    – Mosman Park (Stirling down to McCabe St)
    – Canning Vale reverse
    – Shelley & Bannister
Re: the Preston Point Road – Trannys should be ok as long as they pack up and pair up and control the road between Petra St and turning right at the roundabout to head down Wauhop – I do this on Tuesday evenings.
For less confident or social riders – its probably better to turn right at Petra St roundabout and left into the narrow lane running along the north edge of the tennis courts, and right into Wauhop Rd.

  4. Friggin’ soddin’ rain. 4.40am. Got up, got dressed, got out on the princess … and 4 mins down the bike path the heavens opened .. I couldn’t see anything in front of me. So for safety’s sake I was forced to abandon my favourite ride of the week and turn back. I am seriously grumpy ;0(.

  5. It was worse for me I was nice and comfortable in bed then all of a sudden this cold wet bottom was pressing against me……

    1. sorry, is this the zac that used to ride with us…what shortcuts are you talking about. you cannot take shortcuts with strava as it takes the ride data from the gps, not just a nominal time from your computer.

  6. I did the same Lennie – got about 2 mins down the road and it stared raining, so I turned back and decided to jump on the wind trainer and got a good sweat up for an hour…so I’m not as grumpy as you are 🙂

Although you and Jonny shouldn’t be grumpy at all 🙂

So I assume FlyingFynn and Zac will be out there next Thursday then…

    1. I can’t paul, I have only just got back into training after about 5 and a half weeks because of a virus, the doctors still don’t know what exactly it is.
might come running next week ryan if I can get some fitness done before then

  7. Was all set to ride this morning as well, then woke up at the time I was supposed to be leaving. Oh well, had to do with just the ride to work. Been a bit remiss lately with the longer rides. Will have to do something about that.

  8. Well I’m in Singapore at the moment and the weather is great 25 degrees at night.. Love it.. 100kms tues night, 70 kms Wed night and 100 thursday night … Will ride Sunday morning- prob another 100kms and then last ride tuesday night another 100kms… 🙂

  9. Hi Pete,

I can’t make it this weekend unfortunately. I may get to the beginning of the ride but need to get to work by 8.

    Sorry.
